The German book trade
Reading a book is still one of the most popular leisure activities in Germany. And of course reading is linked to the wish for lifelong learning.
95,800 new titles were published in Germany in 2010: fiction, children's books, art and photography books, re-issues of great German authors and thinkers of the past, as well as current academic, scientific and educational publications. In 2010, more than 8,100 (2009: 6,200) German titles were translated into over 40 languages.
English is still the dominant language of origin for translations into German, with a total share of 65 per cent.
